SCAD Equestrian Center

With 52 horse stalls, the new stable at the SCAD Equestrian Center in Jasper, South Carolina also accommodates offices, vet facilities, tack rooms, locker rooms, wash stalls, and meeting space for events or academic instruction for SCAD’s prestigious equestrian studies program. Although the new stable is substantially larger than the original stable building, it was sited and designed to complement the existing size, scale, and architectural character of its counterpart while still having its own identity.

On the exterior, the architecture is a playful combination of traditional architectural forms in a slightly exaggerated scale to fulfill the programmatic requirements of the building in an economical, yet elegant, assembly. The combined language of the board and batten siding, metal roofing, and a combination of dormers and cupolas gave the project a vernacular material palette while also allowing an abundance of natural light and passive ventilation. On the interior, vaulted ceilings and the repetitive structure of the heavy timber columns and trusses and lighting create an airy and architectural space. The long hallways and oversized sliding doors frame the views to the paddocks beyond.
