Ford Plantation Residence

Located in Henry Ford’s former Lowcountry retreat of Richmond Hill, Georgia, this private home is a modern residence inspired by the grandeur of a classic Southern estate. Here, soaring living spaces unfold in a central pavilion defined by Savannah Grey brick, which was used everywhere from the exterior façade to a long barrel-vaulted gallery. Traditional materials give character while overscaled spaces are executed with modern engineering, including a 40-by-60-foot great room which opens to wraparound rear porches, celebrating the view of the adjacent lagoon and a golf course beyond.

Two symmetrical pavilions house the bedrooms, with twin master suites on the ground floor and second-floor bedrooms for the family’s four teenage children situated in mirrored wings. The symmetry is meaningfully interrupted by a porte-cochère and mudroom positioned at the edge of the motor court, spaces that echo the materiality and rustic grandeur of the house, with features like brick floors, salvaged cabinetry, and a pressed tin ceiling.
