The SCAD Field House and Press Box was a reimagination of the school’s existing utilitarian field sports facility in Jasper County, South Carolina. Challenged with a limited budget, the designers worked with the existing structures and clad them with custom finishes to create a new atmosphere that brought the same sensibility towards design that characterizes the Savannah College of Art and Design. The success of the project is in the details, as the bones of the facility were in place when the project began. Utilitarian metal bleacher seating was clad in a custom wood box, resulting in the appearance of custom furniture. The shed that previously housed the Press Box was retained and renovated with a new spiral-metal stair with mesh railings, board-and-batten walls with custom SCAD Bee-inspired honeycomb cladding, and a cantilevered roof offering additional shelter. The board-and-batten siding was a nod to the school’s state-of-the-art equestrian facility which sits adjacent to the fields. Custom shade sails were suspended over the seating to shield the relentless sun and offer cover from gentle rains.
